The Circana Take:
- There continues to be a flurry of streaming sports partnerships allowing more fans to migrate away from the traditional cable TV bundle. This is one of many more to come.
Game Shows, Hulu, and Peacock
Sony announced that starting this fall, Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune will have next day streaming rights for new episodes on Hulu and Peacock. This is the first time that new syndicated episodes of either show will stream the day after their broadcast TV airing. The deal also includes access to catalog episodes of the shows. Jeopardy! (41 seasons) and Wheel of Fortune (42 seasons) are among the most-watched syndicated shows in the US, garnering around seven million viewers each night. One by one, traditional television shows are making their way to streaming.
The Circana Take:
- The migration of game shows such as these shows how content owners recognize the older audience is moving from cable to streaming. This coupled with shifting sports rights suggests we are about to see another cable exodus.
ESPN brand campaign
ESPN will unveil a new campaign during the NBA finals as a prelude to the launch of the new ESPN streaming service later this year. The “Sports Forever” campaign features a clip from ESPN’s inaugural debut broadcast on Sept. 7, 1979. This includes anchor Lee Leonard showing viewers “sports heaven” while clips of Leonard are mixed in with today’s athletes, teams and games, and ESPN’s signature “dadada, dadada” sound plays in the background. The spot ends showing a sports fan on the couch, picking up their phone as the “dadada, dadada” music plays. A text block displays “Fall 2025: The Next Era Begins.”
The Circana Take:
- Nostalgia’s back.
