Peacock’s Latest Price Hike Signals Streaming’s New Profitability Era

NBCUniversal announced another round of Peacock subscription price increases, marking the platform's fourth rate hike in four years. Peacock Premium rises from $10.99 to $12.99/month, Peacock Premium Plus increases from $16.99 to $19.99/month, and the Select tier moves from $7.99 to $8.99/month. Existing subscribers will see the new pricing take effect on their next billing date on or after September 17, 2026. The move comes shortly after Peacock reported its first-ever profitable quarter and reached 48 million paid subscribers. Peacock's sports portfolio, breakout reality franchises such as Love Island USA and The Traitors, and its expanding premium content library have helped strengthen subscriber momentum and support the service's growing market position.

The Circana Take:

  • Peacock's latest price increase underscores a broader shift across the streaming industry from subscriber acquisition to profitability. Having recently achieved its first profitable quarter, NBCUniversal is signaling that sustainable revenue growth, and earnings are becoming a greater priority than subscriber growth.
  • Exclusive live sports are becoming an increasingly important source of differentiation and monetization across the streaming industry. Peacock's portfolio of NFL, NBA, WNBA, Premier League, and college sports content provides NBCUniversal with premium programming that helps attract and retain subscribers and may support greater pricing flexibility compared with streaming services that rely primarily on entertainment content.

Peacock Expands Beyond Streaming with Loyalty Program

NBCUniversal is testing a new membership rewards program for a randomly selected group of Peacock Premium and Peacock Premium Plus subscribers, reflecting the company's evolving approach to subscriber engagement. The beta program features tiered rewards based on subscriber tenure, including merchandise discounts, a complimentary one-year Instacart+ membership, promotional partner offers, and future access to Universal Parks experiences, NBCUniversal content previews, and live events. NBCUniversal says the initiative is designed to provide meaningful recognition, exclusive access, flexibility, and experiences that extend beyond traditional discounts.

The Circana Take:

  • Peacock's rewards initiative reflects a broader shift from subscription-based streaming to membership-based entertainment. Beyond content delivery, the program is designed to deepen engagement through exclusive experiences, partner benefits, rewards, and other consumer touchpoints that strengthen loyalty and enhance perceived subscriber value.
  • Peacock's membership program highlights the strategic advantages of NBCUniversal's diversified media ecosystem. By connecting streaming with theme parks, consumer products, live events, retail partnerships, and franchise-based experiences, NBCUniversal can extend subscriber engagement beyond video content alone and offer benefits that differ from those available through many pure-play streaming services. Notably, the goal is to increase subscriber lifetime value while reducing churn.

ESPN Price Increases Reinforce the Growing Value of Sports in the Streaming Era

Disney is increasing pricing across ESPN streaming plans and several Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN bundles beginning September 17, 2026. ESPN Select will rise from $12.99 to $13.99/month, while ESPN Unlimited increases from $29.99 to $31.99/month. Key Disney bundles that include ESPN Select will also see monthly price increases of $2 to $3, while bundles containing ESPN Unlimited will remain unchanged. The move marks ESPN's first major streaming price increase since the company's direct-to-consumer service launched in 2025 and reflects the broader industry trend toward monetizing premium streaming content through higher subscription pricing.

The Circana Take:

  • ESPN's first price increase since launching its direct-to-consumer service highlights the continued monetization potential of premium live sports in streaming. By raising standalone prices ahead of the fall sports season, Disney is signaling confidence in the strength of ESPN's sports rights portfolio and its ability to attract and retain dedicated sports fans.
  • Disney's continued emphasis on Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN bundles reflects the growing importance of multi-service streaming relationships. While several ESPN Select bundles are increasing in price, Disney has maintained pricing on ESPN Unlimited bundles that include Disney+ and Hulu, highlighting the role bundled offerings play within its broader streaming strategy and consumer ecosystem.
