Visible Runs Big Promotions for 2sday

Though it certainly was not an official bank holiday, Visible took the opportunity to make a date full of 2’s into a promotional event. For the majority of February 2022, Visible (a Verizon brand) was offering new customers two months of service on an unlimited plan for $22. Typically, this service costs $40 per month (so, $80 for two), making this deal slightly over one-quarter of the regular pricing. Barring eligibility, new customers could also receive a $100 or $200 gift card (the latter only on February 2) if they port in a number and bring their own device or purchase one of a selection of device options provided. Customers can choose to receive a virtual gift card in the form of Mastercard, Amazon, and others.

The NPD Take:

  • These promotions yield massive savings to any consumer switching to Visible between February 2 and February 24. This was an opportunity to help get Visible’s foot in the door with customers, as awareness of the brand is low and there is excitement around the prevalence of 2s on this month’s calendar. Since it is not an annual holiday, it was a unique time and premise for Visible’s strategy, with fewer competitive promotions vying for consumers’ attention at the same time.

Metro Reacts to Cricket’s iPhone Promo

Metro captured the spotlight in this week’s device promotions with its $49 iPhone 11 offer. Though highlighted boldly on the website, it is an in-store only offer just like any other Metro offer, as the prepaid carrier does not run an e-commerce store for digital shoppers. Additionally, those looking to take advantage of this deal must switch to Metro from another service provider and activate the iPhone 11 on a $60 per month rate plan, which must be maintained for at least 3 months. Other details include a port-in requirement and ID validation. Currently Metro’s other homepage smartphone promotion is also for switchers: a free 5G phone of your choice from select models.

The NPD Take:

  • Last week we saw Cricket Wireless dock the price of the same model to $99. Metro’s $49 iPhone 11 promotion adds another, even lower-cost, opportunity for Prepaid switchers to save money on an iPhone. These two promotions can help expand Apple’s base in the Prepaid segment of the market.
  • While the device price is impressively low, especially for the phone’s vintage, the required $60 per month rate plan may be a barrier to some value-seeking consumers. However, the requirement for switchers to join on Metro’s most expensive service plan may deter shoppers looking for long-term savings. This plan requirement is the same as that for the Cricket promotion, however, and the $60 service must be kept for at least 3 months before changing the plan.
