Disney+ has new subscriber benefits

Disney+ subscribers are getting early access to merchandise on shopDisney.com. For a limited test launch, Disney+ customers can access exclusive toys, collectibles, and apparel from various Disney properties. Select movies, series, and shorts will even have QR codes for featured products that viewers can purchase by scanning the code with their phones. This is a way for the company to enhance the Disney+ user experience and give subscribers more benefits.

The NPD Take:

  • As more streaming services saturate the market, companies are looking for ways to differentiate and keep viewers subscribing to their platform. Disney continues to look beyond video programming to offer value their competitors can’t.

Streaming takes on the news.

The future of broadcast news is moving toward streaming platforms. While live news and sports programs are still airing on traditional linear television channels, audiences are moving to online streaming services for the majority of their content consumption. Three companies, in particular, are investing more in streaming news services to allow viewers to watch these programs without a traditional pay TV subscription. Disney’s ABC News Live, Paramount’s CBS News Streaming and Comcast’s NBC News Now have been steadily building audiences with their mix of network broadcasts and original live shows and documentaries. Well-known news personalities are beginning to anchor these shows as millions of viewers are tuning in.

The NPD Take

  • There are numerous implications to streaming news like the end of program time limits, lack of need to wait for the next big show to break a story and most importantly, capturing viewers where they are now. Let’s not forget that broadcast news viewers are over 65 meaning this pivot if necessary for survival.
  • This is the next major component of viewership moving to streaming, following the path of TV series and movies over the last decade.
