Disney’s new ESPN streaming service

Disney is launching a new streaming service this Fall called ESPN priced at $29.99/month. The unlimited plan will include all ESPN networks, ABC broadcasts, access to live events, on-demand content, original programming and more. There will also be a bundle option that includes ESPN with Hulu and Disney+ ad-supported tiers for $35.99/month (with an initial offer of $29.99/month) and an ad-free version for $44.99/month. For those who like the current ESPN+ service as it is today, a separate $11.99/month plan will be available for that.

The Circana Take:

  • This is what the industry has been taking about for years, the decoupling of sports from cable TV bundles. While the hefty price tag reflects it, subscribers are already paying near that much for Netflix and Disney will bundle ESPN in every way possible.

Disney+ and Hulu throwback campaign

Speaking of Disney, Disney+ and Hulu are bringing nostalgia back with a campaign featuring popular 1990s and 2000s series including Hannah Montana, Lizzie McGuire, and The Golden Girls

Disney is also creating real-life events around the throwback theme, featuring immersive creations and photo ops at multiple fan events, including VidCon and Destination D23. Furthermore, Disney is partnering with brands such as Swimply and ThredUp to help bring throwback themes to life. Disney+ premium subscribers can also access a 24/7 channel showing retro Disney content including Saturday morning cartoons such as Doug, Recess, Lilo & Stitch: The Series, and Phineas and Ferb.

The Circana Take:

  • While it is important for streamers to include the latest content, catalog programming is growing in popularity. Campaigns such as this, provide Disney with yet another way to keep viewers engaged.
