Xperi edges closer toward a new smart TV OS

TiVo parent Xperi has agreed to purchase connected software provider Vewd. The $109M transaction will support Xperi’s plans toward building a TiVo smart TV OS. In addition to OTT software, Vewd also provides software capabilities for connected car and video-over-broadband. Yes, TiVo already has a smart TV OS which leverages Android TV, but the company is looking to fly solo as they had in the past with their iconic TiVo DVR.

The NPD Take:

  • The acquisition should help the company launch its new TiVo operating systems and potentially enter the already over-crowded smart TV market.
  • Amazon, Xfinity, possibly Roku and TiVo are all looking to make inroads into the smart TV market as they all see a large revenue opportunity through services and advertising.

Discovery+ goes sky high

Warner Bros. Discovery has reached an agreement with American Airlines to bring select original content from Discovery+ and Magnolia Network to American Airlines’ inflight entertainment system. The expanded distribution will allow for broader reach of the streamer’s content while potentially inspiring viewers travel plans.

The NPD Take:

  • The agreement expands Discovery+ reach to a captive audience of travelers, which could in term translate to a potential subscription later-on.
