The Future of Google Nest Secure is Anything but Safe

Google has discontinued the Google Nest Secure alarm system. The company says it will continue to support current users, though no specific details appear to have been revealed.

The NPD Take:

  • Google introduced the system at the end of 2017, but once Ring launched its own system in mid-2018, well…let’s just say as the #3 best unit volume driver so far in 2020, Google has just 4% of US retail sales. This decision was probably due, in part, to the competitive environment, but also likely part of a larger strategy yet to be revealed related to Google’s investment in security company ADT.

Sonos Lends a Hand in the Kitchen

Newer Sonos speakers can now communicate with smart GE Appliances – letting you know when the oven is preheated or dinner is ready. The integration currently works with GE’s ovens, cooktops, and refrigerators, but eventually the compatibility should expand across GE’s entire smart appliance lineup. Notifications can be set up in GE’s GEA SmartHQ app.

The NPD Take:

  • Sonos has traditionally prided itself on being ecosystem-agnostic, and this new integration fits right into that vision – and expands the Sonos reach deeper into the home. Sonos is future proofing for the eventuality of smart kitchens being commonplace.

Abode’s Outdoor Smart Camera is Now on Pre-Order

Abode showed its Outdoor Security Camera at CES 2020 and the camera is now available for pre-order. The camera complements with Abode’s DIY home security system, but also can be used as a standalone camera. The camera comes with a list of standard features such as IP65 weather resistance, 1080p video, 2-way audio, and Alexa and Google Assistant integration. People and package detection is supposed to be on the way via a future firmware update. The early-bird pricing is $159 and is supposed to ship at the end of November.

The NPD Take:

  • Security cameras are an integral part of home security, and Abode needed an outdoor camera to complement its indoor cameras and other DIY offerings. This addition could help tip the buying decision in Abode’s favor for any consumer who is considering, but on the fence, about this brand.
