Ring Video Doorbell 2 Is on Pre-Order

Ring’s new Video Doorbell 2 is now available for pre-order – and coming in at a hefty $249 (well above that new $59 Ring Video Doorbell Wired option that just launched). Of course, this new option has a lot of new features packed in, including 3D Motion Detection that uses radar to identify when an object or person has passed the virtual threshold, and allows users to select the distance of that threshold. The radar is also used to provide users with a new bird’s eye (aerial) view of their property, detailing the route of the person or object that caused the motion to begin with. The doorbell also has a 150-degree square field of view for head-to-toe viewing, and 1536p resolution. It will ship March 31.

The NPD Take:

  • It is almost comical for Ring to follow up so soon after the launch of its new $59 doorbell with one that costs nearly $200 more…but it does also offer a lot more, including the better resolution, the enhanced object detection, and the head to toe view – all of which will make for a better experience. Just how many consumers will justify the additional cost for this, however, remains to be seen. Appeal for the lower cost doorbell is sure to be much broader.

ADT Dishes it Out

ADT and Dish are partnering together to distribute ADT’s smart home security products to Dish’s 20+ million subscriber base. Dish will market, sell, and install ADT products, with Dish subsidiary OnTech Smart Services also pitching in as an installation provider.

The NPD Take:

  • Bringing a large network of consumers within reach, this new partnership furthers ADT’s efforts to bolster its smart home growth trajectory, following the investment from Google last year. The partnership adds to the portfolio of smart home products, including those from Ring and Nest, already available from Dish. Finally, partnerships like this further solidify our sentiment that professional security companies and TV/wireless providers are becoming increasingly more competitive with DIY retail smart home solutions.
