Dropcam, Nest Secure Support Ends

Last week, Google announced it would discontinue support for the Dropcam and Nest Secure security devices. Beginning on April 8th, 2024, both devices will no longer operate and will not be compatible with the Nest app. For owners of these devices, Google has provided upgrade offers. Nest Secure users have the option to receive a Self Setup System from ADT or a $200 credit to use at the Google Store. Dropcam users who subscribe to Nest Aware are eligible for a complementary indoor wired Nest Cam from Google, while non-subscribers can avail of a 50% discount on a new indoor wired Nest Cam.

The Circana Take:

  • As Google seeks to build new products and services and unite its offerings under the Google Home/Google Assistant umbrella, legacy devices will likely be retired. Google’s plan to upgrade users to current generation products is an effective way to both retain users and upsell them into more premium offerings.
  • As more brands sunset their connected home products, programs such as these will become more common.

SwitchBot Releases a Hub

SwitchBot’s Hub 2 is a compact smart hub that connects any installed Bluetooth SwitchBot devices to the cloud while enabling convenient control from SwitchBot’s mobile app.  For SwitchBot’s home automation products such as its smart plugs or smart curtains, Hub 2 can enable automations and remote control and the addition of Matter support will allow the devices to connect to virtually any Home Automation platform. The device’s interface features two buttons that can be programmed for a variety of functions.  Additionally, a small display on the hub shows the current temperature and humidity of the room.

The Circana Take:

  • Though SwitchBot only manufacturers a few categories of devices, the addition of Matter support in the Hub 2 should help drive adoption of their products.  This will help eliminate some friction from the buying experience and create opportunities for other small brands like SwitchBot as consumers will have more choice in what brands to buy.
