Level Introduces a New Doorbell

Smart Lock company Level is launching a doorbell camera exclusively for multifamily buildings. Although not available to the general public for retail sale at this time, this camera targets the smart home market for multifamily buildings as part of a wider multi-unit security system. Contrary to initial assumptions, the camera is designed for individual units  and residents can use the Level app to interact with visitors (it was previously thought that the Level system would stream footage from a master camera at the primary entrance). Level’s new doorbell also features "package identification intelligence" for delivery notifications.

The Circana Take:

  • Smart doorbells have been a strong performing category so far in 2023 so it’s no surprise Level is taking aim at the market.
  • Acknowledging the market share lead brands like Ring and Google have in the category, Level will reportedly focus on the underserved multi-family market.  Though a communal video system is apparently not in the works, this would be an attractive opportunity.

Matter Issues an Update

The CSA announced the release of Matter 1.1, which includes improvements based on developer feedback to facilitate faster device adoption and development. Matter 1.1 specifically enhances support for Intermittently Connected Devices (ICDs), such as battery-operated sensors and door locks, ensuring better compatibility with the standard. Furthermore, Matter has reached a total of 1,135 compatible products from 60 different companies, and a new testing facility in Portland, Oregon, will provide real-life data to developers, potentially leading to higher-quality products.

The Circana Take:

  • Overall, the updates in Matter 1.1 demonstrate promising advancements for the growing standard, and ongoing additions to the device ecosystem will contribute to its continued growth and development.
