TP-Link Releases an Indoor/Outdoor Camera

Tapo, the TP-Link smart home brand, just launched the C120 Indoor/Outdoor security camera. The camera is just $40 and comes with 2K video capture, HD night vision, and an IP66 rating. The C120 is inexpensive at about one third the industry ASP and can be mounted indoors or outdoors. The camera features object and facial detection and offers limited local and cloud storage options.

The Circana Take:

  • The C120’s price is its most notable feature and is designed to drive new users (and new cameras) into the Tapo Care cloud storage service. As the recurring revenue from monthly service plans become an increasing focus of smart home businesses, more entry priced security devices are expected to enter the retail market.

New Psync Security Cameras Leverage GPT

Psync Labs earlier this month announced the Genie S, a security camera that uses ViewSay, a GPT based AI service which can recognize objects and describe videos.  The technology behind ViewSay converts what a camera sees into text descriptions and will automatically edit footage down to the essential moments. The Genie S boasts a 2K resolution image quality and costs $35.  Special AI features are available for $.99 a month per camera.

The Circana Take:

  • With the innovations in AI over the last three years, it is no surprise that smart home devices have now leveraged the technology. While improving the intelligence of digital assistants is an obvious use, advanced computer vision technology like the Genie S uses makes the footage more accessible and actionable. Expect more smart home brands to harness generative AI for marketing purposes in addition to product enhancements.
