tinyPod reinvents the iPod (sort of)

Newar has launched tinyPod, a “case” for the Apple Watch that recreates the look and feel of an iPod. It’s not the first example of converting an Apple Watch into a phone-like device (see KDDI’s Infobar case), but this variation will be available in the US. And unlike the Japanese variation, the tinyPod cleverly uses the click wheel to control the digital crown of the Apple Watch, adding to the nostalgia trip, while also making the gadget more functional.

At $80, the tinyPod is priced close to the price of a standard watch strap for Apple’s Watch, making this a tempting device for consumers who want to leave their smartphone behind occasionally while still carrying a phone (assuming the Watch is cellular of course), rather than a Watch.

The tinyPod will come in several sizes to accommodate the different watch sizes ((41mm, 45mm and 49mm for the Ultra) and should be available later this summer, assuming it hasn’t encroached on any Apple patents, of course.

The Circana Take:

  • Is it a gimmick? Sure, absolutely! But it is a fun gimmick that could potentially drive some sales. It fits the over-hyped “dumb phone” movement without you actually having to give up your smartphone completely as your smartphone number can follow you onto your “fake” dumb-phone.
  • Carriers may want to consider selling this: it’s only really effective as a “case” if consumers have a cellular-enabled Apple Watch… which is great news for the carriers.
  • The tinyPod is particularly effective as it still makes use of the digital crown, and remains true to the Apple legacy by recreating an iPod look and feel. As such, it tugs on the heartstrings (and possibly the wallets) of Apple fans everywhere.
