Redbox and Lionsgate reach a multi-year distribution deal
Redbox and Lionsgate reached a multi-year distribution agreement. The partnership will bring Lionsgate series and film catalog content to Redbox’s AVOD and FAST services while providing Redbox home entertainment distribution for upcoming original content and leading licensing efforts among SVOD services for Redbox Entertainment. The news comes on the heels of an upcoming IPO for Redbox (in combination with Seaport Global Acquisition Corp).
The NPD Take:
- For Redbox, the new agreement brings a wealth of content for its growing digital service while leveraging Lionsgate’s scale to distribute original content for home entertainment thereby expanding reach to a broader audience and aiding the company’s transformation efforts.
- For Lionsgate, the Redbox deal provides another distribution channel for library content.
Redbox partners with Curiosity
Redbox new partnership with Curiosity Stream will bring the content from the streamer to Redbox’s AVOD and FAST services while promoting Curiosity Stream to the established Redbox customer base. Curiosity Stream will be made available to select Redbox customers on a promotional basis and advertised on Redbox’s digital services and at 40,000 kiosks nationwide. Additionally, Redbox will add Curiosity Stream as a premium subscription offering when its Channels service launces in 2022.

- The deal with Curiosity brings more content and value to Redbox customers while further expanding reach for the factual based streaming service.
- As we’ve seen recently, partnerships are becoming the new norm. We expect to see this trend accelerate as targeted services look find their niche among the bigger players.
Discovery+ now available on LG Smart TVs
The Discovery+ streaming app is now available on LG Smart TVs, 10 months after launching in the US. This adds to the other platforms the app is currently streaming on including Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, Samsung Smart TVs, VIZIO Smart TVs and more.
The NPD Take:
- The new agreement offers wider distribution for Discovery+, reaching 13m LG Smart TVs, while providing LG customers with another popular app to drive engagement with the webOS platform.
