Netflix Plans Robust 2022 Film Slate

Netflix announced its lineup for this year which maxes out at 86 movies, 16 more than last year’s 70 titles. Netflix’ release schedule works out to nearly two movies a week comprised of 61 English language narrative movies, 20 non-English titles, and five animated features. 2022 features include Knives Out 2, The Gray Man (Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans), You People (Eddie Murphy), The Mother (Jennifer Lopez), and two Adam Sandler films Hustle, and Spaceman opposite Carey Mulligan. Coming off its massive success of the Korean series Squid Game, Netflix’ movie lineup also includes six Korean titles, more than any other country.

The NPD Take:

  • This expansive slate of new releases with massive star power could make Netflix’s recent price hikes easier to swallow.
  • Netflix continues to heavily invest in new content strengthening its position as the leading streaming service.

HBO Max Enhances Ad-Option

HBO Max will enhance its ad-supported service by featuring faster access to new theatrical films and other movies.  As of the beginning of this year, WarnerMedia theatrical movies will air simultaneously on both the ad-free and ad-supported tiers of HBO Max. All programming content on both the ad-supported and subscription options for HBO Max are now identical.

The NPD Take:

  • Since content on both HBO Max tiers are now identical, this could increase signups and migration to the ad-supported option.

Comcast Unites with AMC Networks

AMC Networks and Comcast Cable said they have reached a new multiyear distribution agreement. The new deal includes continued carriage of AMC’s linear networks and extends distribution of AMC Plus, the ad-free premium content offering. The agreement also will expand the availability of AMC’s targeted streaming services, including Acorn TV, ALLBLK, Shudder and Sundance Now, to additional platforms and devices.

The NPD Take:

  • Notably, AMC’s targeted service cable distribution strategy continues to successfully grow its SVOD revenues.
